Yale Center for British Art and Beinecke Library
Curator-led exhibition tour, visit to newly refurbished Beinecke Library, and lunch at Mory's

Travel with us on a comfortable minibus to New Haven for a day at Yale.  The bus will leave Greenwich at 9:00am.

A curator will lead you on a tour of the Yale Center for British Art exhibit Enlightened Princesses: Caroline, Augusta, Charlotte, and the Shaping of the Modern World.  This exhibition explores the story of three remarkable German princesses: Caroline of Ansbach, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, all of whom married into the British royal family in the eighteenth century.  Caroline and Charlotte became queens consort to George II and George III respectively; Princess Augusta held the titles of Princess of Wales and Princess Dowager, and was mother to King George III.  Through their wide-ranging intellectual, social, and political interests, Caroline, Augusta, and Charolotte helped to shape court culture and the age in which they lived, and would leave a lasting legacy.  They encouraged the greatest philosophers, scientists, artists, and architects of the day in suport of industry, trade, and imperial ambition.  The exhibit includes many important works of art and manufacture, which belonged to these women and their families, or were commissioned by them.  Works by Hans Holbein, William Kent, Allan Ramsay, Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, Thomas Gainsborough, and many more are on display.

The Yale Center for British Art houses the largest collection of British Art outside the United Kingdom.  One of the Center's greatest treasures is the building itself, the last structure designed by the internationally acclaimed American architect Louis I. Kahn.  It was reopened last May following more than a decade of research, renovation, and refurbishment.  Click here to learn more.

The historic Beinecke Library has also just reopened after a renovation and restoration.  Click here for details.  This unique facility will be your other destination while on campus.  The tour will include an introduction to the architecture, updates for teaching and learning in the twenty-first century, highlights of collections (Gutenberg Bible, "incunabula", the earliest printed books in the West), discussion of recent acquisitions, and the current exhibition Gather Out of Star-Dust, featuring the Harlem Renaissance.

Between the two tours, you will enjoy a three-course lunch at Mory’s.

Price is $70 per person including lunch and travel.  Space is limited so RSVP now!  Sponsor members receive priority.  To check whether you are a sponsor member this year, click here or e-mail us at yaagct@gmail.com.
